Restaurants and Cafes Urged to Adjust to Takeaway and Delivery

23 March 2020 – Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) CEO Wes Lambert has today, alongside the three largest online delivery platforms, called for restaurants & cafes across Australia to embrace takeaway and delivery as the only option left to help their businesses trade through the Coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Lambert said there are many options available to businesses to help them take advantage of takeaway and delivery services following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Sunday evening.

“Whether it is standard takeaway, offering a pick up service, delivering yourself to your loyal customer base or taking advantage of one of the online food delivery platforms, there are many options that can keep restaurants and cafes running during these extraordinary times”, Mr Lambert said.

“If the options available to businesses are either closing your doors or remaining open to offer takeaway meals, we are urging businesses wherever possible to keep their doors open, in whatever capacity possible”.

R&CA Gold Partner Menulog said their extensive national marketplace will now give restaurants the opportunity to redeploy their own employees as drivers and use Menulog’s online ordering and delivery integration technology.

Menulog Managing Director, Morten Belling said “We will continue to work very closely with our longstanding partners at Restaurant & Catering Australia to support the restaurant industry in any way we can at this time. Our national delivery logistics service that covers 87% of the addressable population is available for those restaurants without drivers, or if restaurants decide to redeploy their staff as drivers we can support these businesses with a lower commission model in our self-delivery marketplace.”

“In addition to further relief and safety measures introduced over the past two weeks, Menulog has invested in additional resource in order to quickly provide online ordering and delivery solutions to impacted hospitality businesses to keep them in trade”, Mr Belling said.

UberEats Managing Director Jodie Auster said “The decision by the Government to allow kitchens to remain open as an essential service is critically important and gives independent restaurants across the country access to income and the ability to retain as many staff members as possible. This is an incredibly challenging time for the restaurant industry and Uber Eats is pleased to see the level of support that has been extended to small businesses through the Government’s relief package.”

Deliveroo CEO Ed McManus said “We are pleased that the Government will allow restaurants and cafes to stay open for takeaway and delivery. This will provide a vital revenue stream for small to medium businesses during this time, alleviate pressure on supermarkets and will allow people to have food delivered to their homes at a time when people are being asked practice social distancing.”

R&CA is the peak industry association representing the over 47,000 restaurants, cafes and caterers across Australia.
